If you are traveling to England, get out of London if possible. While there are many sights there worth seeing, much was bombed out during World War II and post-war sprawl spreads out as far as the eye can see. Once outside of the tourist strip along the Thames, it is not unlike any other big city. The truly great city of the Britain is Edinburgh. It owes much of its glory to the Scottish Enlightenment, an intellectual movement that changed the world. During the 1700s the last

David Hume and Adam Smith at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery

Jacobite rebellions against the English crown ended in bitter defeat. Scotland was small, subjugated by its more powerful neighbor, and the poorest country in Western Europe. Prospects were bleak yet against all expectations, there arose a torrent of creativity, thought, and inventiveness.

Adam Smith laid the foundations for modern capitalism with his Wealth of Nations, while David Hume also wrote about the nature of wealth and established modern secular thought. Joseph Black and James Watt made improvements to the early steam engine that were later critical in bringing about the industrial revolution. Literature flourished with writers such as Robert Burns(a poet with his very own holiday) and Sir Walter Scott(Rob Roy, Ivanhoe). The Scots founded the first public school system since antiquity and soon had one of the highest rates of literacy in Europe. Entirely new fields in science were founded such as thermochemistry, sociology, and geology. Above all, the Scottish enlightenment was defined by a drive to define the world in rational terms. For instance, the lay of the land and the properties of the Earth had previously been seen as the product of biblical creation. This began to change when James Hutton began observing rock type, formation, and layers. Geology resulted when he realized that he was looking into millions of years of natural history… This sort of thinking did much to further the development of modern science, philosophy, and engineering in the coming centuries.

In Edinburgh’s ‘New’ Town, there is an entire district of the city in that was built during the Scottish Enlightenment with a distinct and easily identifiable architecture. With the dramatic view from Edinburgh’s high hilltops, one can see an entire swath that was instilled with the vigorous spirit of those times. The city as a whole is among the prettiest in Europe yet is not at all huge. It is compact and elegant without much sprawl. The modest size of this town allowed an unexpected generation of super geniuses to be personally acquainted with one another. They were able to discuss and debate at the local bar just like regular buddies. The result of this close association was an unusual ideological unity and coherency. It is not easy to attribute some of the Scottish Enlightenment’s greatest accomplishments to just one person because these great Scots collaborated so frequently.

In the day of the Scottish Enlightenment, the established economic view was mercantilism, the belief that wealth is gold and silver. Monarchs adopted interventionist policies and trade restrictions to maximize royal stores of bullion. David Hume, however, believed that money is only a means to allow fluid exchange of goods and services, which are the real wealth. Adam Smith, Hume’s good friend, agreed with this premise and expanded on it by postulating that an economy would function better with natural laws of individual incentive and competition than with monarchical intervention.

Perhaps the Scots learned something important from their own success story. Although small, poor, and conquered, they found that acting according to rationally constructed principles could quickly change their situation. Perhaps they realized that with the right way of thinking, the right kind of ideas follow.

Indeed, it could not be said the Scottish enlightenment ever truly came to an end. Scotland continued to produce world famous scientists, authors(heard of Robert Louis Stevenson?), industrialists, and philosophers. From the original outpouring of innovation, Scottish brilliance spread across the world. Andrew Carnegie and Alexander Graham Bell were among the particularly notable exports in the subsequent ‘Scottish invasion.’ As well as these later individuals are known, not as much attention is given to the boom that started it all. There is something mysterious about the unexpected rise of Scotland. ‘Where did it come from?’ is a question that not even scholars can easily answer.

One of the main reasons why Edinburgh is great to stay at, is that in one location you have a vast variety for places and activates to attend.

Military Tattoo

The most famous festival is the anal show of the Military tattoo. Which is held at the magnificent castle which sits right on top a hill.

Embarking on an overseas holiday is exciting but stressful at the same time. As few of us are lucky enough to do this on a regular basis, the task of packing for even a short period away can be daunting. Most people manage to pack the majority of their possessions just in case the unforeseen occurs. Of course, it usually does, but it is rare that anything in the mountain you have brought with you from the other side of the world is of any use at all. Aside from the obvious tickets, passports and so on, here is a list of the top ten things to pack to ensure that you get the most out of your next trip without having to hire a porter.

1. Passport Wallet

Your passport is your lifeline when outside your own country, so you need to be vigilant of its whereabouts at all times. However, you don’t want your holiday fun to be ruined by passport paranoia either. Unless you’re going to a location where swimsuits are the attire of choice, day and night, some type of concealed passport wallet is indispensable. My design of choice is a leather zip-up pouch which is looped over the belt and worn inside the trouser. This provides a comfortable solution, while keeping your passport and other important items such as credit cards hidden from view, but reasonably easily accessible.

2. Digital Camera – Pocket Sized

How many times have you missed the best photo of your holiday because you’ve gone out to dinner and didn’t want to carry a heavy camera around? These days, technology affords us the ability to carry great photographic power with minimal weight and dimensions. Even if you prefer your SLR, a compact digital may just capture the winning moment when you least expect it.

3. Hello, Thank You and Goodbye in 101 Languages

Nothing warms the heart more than hearing someone who clearly has no grasp of your own language trying to utter a friendly greeting. Even though it won’t lead to a meaningful conversation, being able to stumble through a few words in the language of your destination may endear you to the locals more than just speaking louder and more slowly in English and wondering why no-one understands you.

4. Your Common Sense

Many of us suffer from some form of invincibility complex as soon as we get on that plane. Remember that not all countries observe the same safety obsession that we do, and just because the locals or other tourists are doing it, doesn’t mean you should too. While I’m all for a spirit of adventure, I’m also a big supporter of making it home in one piece, so have fun by all means, but if you wouldn’t do it at home, it’s probably best just to watch.

5. A Diary

We’d all like to think that we’ll never forget that moment. Problem is that with all the moments that happen when we’re overseas, sometimes these memories on returning home is a little blurred. A year or so down the track, blurry might be only on a good day. It doesn’t take long to jot down a few notes at the end of each day’s adventures. A few minutes spent now may mean a lifetime of clarity (it helps with all those photos too).

6. Pegs

You’d think that going on holiday meant a brief hiatus from domestic chores. However, when you’re onto your last pair of socks with a week left in your trip, you’ll be glad you packed those pegs. The designers of international hotels didn’t really have hand-washing in mind when they designed their suites, but a small quantity of pegs may be the difference between an enjoyable ending to your holiday and being all alone on the trip home.

7. All Your Important Numbers on a Single Handy Card

Even though we like to think we have every possible eventuality covered, few of us can recite our credit card numbers off by heart, never mind our passport number. Keeping a record of the numbers of all of your important cards, your passport, hotels, flight details, insurance providers and so on can mean the difference between a quick phone call to sort everything out and being stranded in the middle of a foreign country with no form of identification. Of course, don’t forget to keep it in a place well removed from the actual documents themselves.

8. Playing Cards

You’d be surprised how creative you can get with a couple of decks of cards and an eleven hour stopover in an international airport. After browsing the shops for a whole hour, then realizing you still have ten hours to wait, get out those cards and start inventing your own games. You never know, it might even be fun!

9. Fold-Up Poncho

Not sure if these exist in your part of the world, but where I come from you can buy a fold-up plastic raincoat with hood for about $1. Essentially a large plastic bag with three wholes in it (for your head and arms), this could save you from a sudden drenching if you’re headed for tropical parts.

10. Your Sense of Humor

I know it was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime, but an international holiday without some type of unplanned incident seems to be a rarity. However, armed with your sense of humor, most of the time you can turn a close call into an adventure you’ll be telling your grandchildren about.

So, next time you’re madly preparing for your early morning flight, remember these five things, and have a great holiday.

Great vacations provide lots of fun for every member of the family and a lifetime of fond memories. The challenge lies in finding vacation spots the whole family will love. Great family vacations combine a variety of activities that will appeal to each person, providing fun for the younger and older kids and interest and relaxation for their parents. The following vacation destinations offer a change of scene, thrills and spills for the kids and a dash of culture and history for mom and dad. Several destinations also contain budget-conscious options.
When parents think fun for the kids, Disney usually comes to mind. Both Disneyland in California and Walt Disney World in Florida excel at offering attractions that appeal to adults and kids alike. The advantage of the larger Walt Disney Resort in Orlando lies in its sheer size and number of attractions. The big draws are Epcot Center; the Hollywood Studios, Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom theme parks; Downtown Disney and the Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon water parks. Disney World offers many hotel and theme park packages. There are also customizable tickets for people staying off-site. Park restaurants offer everything from casual to fine dining. Disney World offers many on-site hotels ranging in quality and price from value to deluxe. All Disney properties offer free trips to and from Orlando International Airport, free transportation throughout the park and extended theme park hours for hotel guests.
Disneyland, on the other hand, lacks water parks but offers Disneyland Park, Disney California Adventure Park and the Downtown Disney District. It also has shorter lines than its Florida cousin. Parents might want to keep in mind that attractions are more accessible in Disneyland, especially if they have only a couple of days to spend at the resort. Disneyland is home to three Disney hotels. The resort recommends a mix of economy, deluxe and moderate nearby Good Neighbor Hotels for those wishing to stay off-site.
Also in California, San Diego offers as much entertainment for adults as it does for children. The kids will love the 70 miles of beaches, the world-famous zoo and the Wild Animal Park. Parents will enjoy the restaurants and shopping of Seaport Village, the markets and history of Old Town and the museums of Balboa Park. The whole family will be entertained by animal shows and visits to penguins, dolphins and sharks at Sea World. For an old-fashioned amusement park experience, families can take in Belmont Park on the Mission Beach boardwalk. The Giant Dipper wooden roller coaster will thrill adults and older kids alike. There are also gentler rides for the younger children. The park is also home to restaurants, shops and the Mission Beach Plunge swimming pool. And for really hot summer days, Knott’s Soak City U.S.A offers 22 wild water rides with a 1950s San Diego coast theme. San Diego boasts a wonderful sunny climate, with April and the months of July through October providing the very best weather.
For families who cannot get enough of the outdoors, three national parks stand out as superior destinations for vacations. The Grand Canyon offers spectacular, unique scenery and a number of activities sure to please the adventure-loving family, including rafting, kayaking, hiking, the Grand Canyon Railway and numerous restaurants. Yosemite, meanwhile, offers the benefit of being close to San Francisco and offers both lodging and camping. Families can fish, hike, bike, ride horses and swim in pools or the Merced River. Yellowstone, which straddles Wyoming, Idaho and Montana, offers diverse wildlife, boating, biking, camping, picnicking and fishing. Kids 5-12 are welcome to participate in the Junior Ranger program.
City-lovers will find a lot going on in Washington, D.C. Best of all, a number of the most interesting attractions are free. There is no admittance fee for the National Zoo and the 17 museums of the Smithsonian complex, including the National Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of Natural History and the National Portrait Gallery. Tours of the Lincoln Memorial, the Capitol Building and the White House are also available. The city provides a number of great restaurants for hungry families. In summer, visitors can take in a multitude of concerts, parades and festivals. July and August are also good months for the best hotel deals. The city offers a wide selection of bus tours of major sites as well as bike and boat tours. As far as transportation goes, the Metro covers the whole city and offers free rides to children under the age of 4.
The thrill-seekers in the family will be happy to learn that Six Flags America is located just 30 minutes from downtown Washington, D.C. The park operates from April through October and offers over 100 rides as well as the area’s largest water park. Parents should note that Washington, D.C., weather is hot and humid in July and August. Families will need to stop often for drinks and remember to wear hats and sun block.

Another destination mixing education and fun is Colonial Williamsburg. All family members will enjoy the presentation of hands-on history of colonial life. Entertainment includes historic speeches, parades, arts performances and walking tours. Revolutionary City is a street theater program presenting scenes of everyday colonial life against the backdrop of momentous historical events. Educational opportunities include a representation of the Great Hopes Plantation, which shows the lives of African American slaves. Colonial Williamsburg offers value, deluxe and premium hotels rooms from $59 to $799 a night. Hotels offer spring, summer, fall and holiday packages. Nearby Kingsmill Resort has its own recreational opportunities such as golf courses, tennis courts and a sports club with indoor and outdoor pools and exercise classes.
The more variety of experience a family packs into a vacation, the more they will remember it for years to come. These eight family vacation destinations incorporate a good mixture of educational, fun and economical activities. Best of all, they will provide opportunities for a lot of fun together, and great times, which is really what family vacations are all about.

First, choose the location of the hotel wisely. Take into account the place that you want to visit most and the availability of public transport there if you don’t drive. By doing this you will save money on transportation cost as well as time. The time that you save from transit can be used to explore more of the place that you visit. This will be more fulfilling as you can focus on exploring the place and creating great memories instead of wasting your time unnecessarily on traveling.

Sometimes the rate can go higher as the vacant rooms become scarce. If your schedule allows it, go on your vacation during midweek. The rates are usually lower compared to weekends.
